Oh Captain, My Captain

Dallas Buyers Club

Tampa Bay Buccaneers at Dallas Cowboys
Thursday, October 8, 2026 · 7:15 p.m. Central

From the Editor's Couch

Let's put the women and children to bed and go lookin' for f**in' dinner.

Tonight we're cooking up a DraftKings fantasy lineup for Tampa Bay at Dallas—because having the team name “Cee Deez Nuts” is not reason enough to play Lamb at Captain. The joke can remain undefeated in the dudes chat. The lineup needs a little evidence.

Issue 1 covered the strategy. Dallas Buyers Club puts it to work: three game stories, six names at a time, and one running back who can ruin a perfectly good passing theory from the two-yard line.

Why Male Models?

Three ways this game could go, seven lineups that tell the story, and what has to happen for us to look like we know what we’re doing.

Latest personnel: Tampa is without Winfield, Morrison and Dennis; Dallas is without Durant, Overshown and Shelton. Smith’s return improves Dallas’s blocking outlook, but does not guarantee where the touchdowns land. [1][12]

The matchup in four numbers

Tampa rush yards allowed/game78.5

Reason to explore a passing-led Dallas attack [3]

Dallas rush yards allowed/game150.3

Tampa has a path to keep drives alive [3]

Daniels's debut70.4% completions · 5.5 yards/attempt

Accurate completions did not produce much yardage [2]

Dallas interceptions through four games0

Han Solo's turnover story asks for a change [3]

Rothstein Model

There are three ways of doing things around here: the right way, the wrong way, and the way I do it.

Dallas controls the game. Tampa does enough to contribute, and scoring lands near our saved Dallas −8.5 / total 47.5 market anchor: implied totals of 28 and 19.5. This is our original model anchor, not a live quote. An October 8 FantasyLabs preview lists Dallas −8.5 with a 48.5 total (implied 28.5–20); the model below retains its original assumptions and has not been rerun against that newer snapshot. [6][15]

Core BuildOur central player projections
CAPTAIN · 1.5×CeeDee Lamb$17,700
  • Javonte Williams$10,800
  • Dak Prescott$10,400
  • Cade Otton$4,400
  • Ryan Flournoy$3,800
  • Ted Hurst III$2,800
Total / unused$49,900 / $100
4 Dallas · 2 Tampa
Touchdown BetSpecific players get the touchdowns
CAPTAIN · 1.5×George Pickens$14,100
  • Javonte Williams$10,800
  • Dak Prescott$10,400
  • Jalon Daniels$8,600
  • Ryan Flournoy$3,800
  • Tez Johnson$2,200
Total / unused$49,900 / $100
4 Dallas · 2 Tampa

Why it works: Lamb's catches and yardage drive the Core Build, with Williams retaining his scoring opportunities. The Touchdown Bet gives Pickens the multiplier for a two-receiving-TD branch and deliberately fades Lamb.

What breaks it: Williams taking the touchdowns hurts Lamb Captain. Lamb taking the passing scores hurts Pickens Captain. Hurst and Tez Johnson remain uncertain-volume salary plays; cheap does not mean dependable.

Testing takeaway: The Core Build led our seven candidates in average points within the central Rothstein simulation. Pickens's two-TD allocation is a scenario to test, not a forecast to treat as fact.

Han Solo Model

Never tell me the odds.

Dallas moves mainly through the air. Tampa hangs around early, then stalled drives and two or three turnovers put it behind. Dallas gives one back, because apparently a comfortable Thursday wasn't included in the NFL Package. Working score: 27–16.

  • George Pickens$9,400
  • Chase McLaughlin$5,000
  • Cade Otton$4,400

CAPTAIN · 1.5×Dak Prescott$15,600
  • CeeDee Lamb$11,800
  • Jake Ferguson$6,400
  • Brandon Aubrey$5,400
  • Chase McLaughlin$5,000
  • Cowboys DST$4,800
Total / unused$49,000 / $1,000
5 Dallas · 1 Tampa

Why it works: The Core Build captures Dallas receiving production and Tampa catches and field goals. The Touchdown Bet tests Ferguson with two receiving TDs, while Dak stays Captain; both kickers and Dallas defense benefit from the stalled-drive story. Ferguson has a two-TD game this season, but that is precedent, not a promise. [5]

What breaks it: Tampa finishes drives with touchdowns instead of field goals, or short fields leave Dak without the yardage we need. McLaughlin is the Touchdown Bet's only Tampa player. Dallas entered with four sacks and no interceptions, so the takeaway assumption is deliberately aggressive. [3]

Testing takeaway: Both builds held up within this script. The kickers-and-defense version weakened sharply when Tampa sustained more offense. Our 27-point illustration allows three offensive TDs and two field goals—not a touchdown for everybody.

Coach Taylor Model

Y’all ought to be proud of yourselves. That was a hell of an effort tonight.

Tampa limits turnovers to 0–1, Daniels extends drives, and Dallas keeps throwing into the fourth quarter. The underdog makes it interesting and still loses: 28–24.

Core BuildOur central player projections
CAPTAIN · 1.5×Dak Prescott$15,600
  • CeeDee Lamb$11,800
  • Jalon Daniels$8,600
  • Chris Godwin Jr.$7,200
  • Ryan Flournoy$3,800

Touchdown BetSpecific players get the touchdowns
CAPTAIN · 1.5×George Pickens$14,100
  • Dak Prescott$10,400
  • Jalon Daniels$8,600
  • Bucky Irving$8,400
  • Cade Otton$4,400
  • Ryan Flournoy$3,800
Total / unused$49,700 / $300
3 Dallas · 3 Tampa

Why it works: Godwin and Daniels give the Core Build a route to Tampa production. The Touchdown Bet swaps the receiving emphasis for Irving's backfield opportunity and a Pickens two-TD branch. Daniels ran for 55 yards last week; Godwin caught six passes, though they produced only 31 yards. Tampa needs progress, not a replay. [2]

What breaks it: Tampa punts away the competitive game. Hurst's limited volume also threatens the Core Build; a big Lamb night threatens the Touchdown Bet. Daniels and Irving cannot both collect the same rushing touchdown.

Testing takeaway: The Core Build led our seven candidates in average points within this script. Payout rankings changed with the assumed field. Both versions fade Williams; the Touchdown Bet also fades Lamb.

The Williams variation: throws get the credit, runs get the touchdowns

Dallas can move through the air while Williams finishes the drives. Keep Han Solo's 27–16 picture, but give Williams two rushing TDs, Dallas one passing TD and two field goals.

Williams alternativeWilliams finishes the drives
CAPTAIN · 1.5×Javonte Williams$16,200
  • CeeDee Lamb$11,800
  • Dak Prescott$10,400
  • Chase McLaughlin$5,000
  • Ryan Flournoy$3,800
  • Ted Hurst III$2,800
Total / unused$50,000 / $0
4 Dallas · 2 Tampa

Why it works: Williams gets the multiplier; Dak and Lamb can still earn points through yardage and catches. Williams has 15 catches for 77 yards and one receiving TD through four games, offering a PPR cushion rather than premium receiving upside. [4]

What breaks it: Dallas throws the goal-line scores or shares the carries. Hurst still needs involvement, and McLaughlin needs field-goal opportunities.

Testing takeaway: This led our seven candidates in average points within the Williams script. It is a touchdown-allocation alternative to Han Solo, not a fourth independently validated strategy.

We Were on a Break!

Seven lineups keep seeing the same guys. Here’s who we can part with, what the breakup costs, and why Flournoy keeps getting invited back.

Seven lineups. Some very familiar faces.

Dak Prescott7 of 7

Every lineup depends on some Dallas passing production

Ryan Flournoy6 of 7

Cheap receiving volume remains important

CeeDee Lamb5 of 7

Five builds share his receiving outcome

Cade Otton3 of 7

Repeated Tampa tight-end exposure

Ted Hurst III3 of 7

Repeated uncertain-volume receiver exposure

Every six-player group is different. That doesn't make these a balanced portfolio. Seven theories can still have the same bad evening.

Don't put the entire evening on Flournoy

Flournoy makes six of our seven lineups fit. That also gives one affordable Dallas receiver six chances to ruin our evening. The Han Solo Touchdown Bet is the only build without him.

If you're playing more than one candidate, these swaps offer ways to reduce that shared exposure. They change the game story as well as the salary—Dallas receiving volume becomes Tampa receiving volume.

Starting buildFlournoy replacementNew totalWhat you trade
Rothstein Core BuildTez Johnson$48,300Dallas receiving exposure for a less certain Tampa role
Rothstein Touchdown BetTed Hurst III$48,900Keep Tez; add Hurst's uncertain receiving volume
Han Solo Core BuildTed Hurst III$49,000One fewer Dak receiver; more Tampa receiving exposure
Coach Taylor Core BuildTez Johnson$48,200Keep Hurst; rely more heavily on Tampa's receivers
Coach Taylor Touchdown BetTed Hurst III$48,700Keep Otton; add another Tampa receiving path
Williams variationTez Johnson$48,400Less Dallas passing exposure alongside Williams Captain

All six swaps preserve unique players, both teams and the cap. They are salary-legal alternatives, not reoptimized improvements. Hurst appears in three primary builds already; Tez is already in the Rothstein Touchdown Bet. Don't add either twice. Gainwell costs $200 more than Flournoy and requires another adjustment in these six builds; Godwin and Egbuka require larger rebuilds.

Tampa lists Hurst as a starter and Tez behind Egbuka. Hurst's eight catches for 128 yards and one TD through four games show involvement, not dependable volume. [10][11] Replacing Flournoy with either player moves the cheap-receiver risk rather than making it disappear. Otton still appears in three primary builds, so keep an eye on that shared exposure, too.

Everybody’s Got a Guy

Who the field is likely to roster, where we might disagree, and why being the only guy at the party with Tez Johnson isn’t automatically a flex.

Editorial ownership estimates — prepared October 7; reviewed October 8 at 2:40 p.m. Central. These are our uncalibrated forecasts, not actual contest ownership or a paid feed. Public providers disagree, including between their own article and tool; we have not relabeled our estimates as sourced consensus. A small number is not automatically leverage. [14]

PlayerEstimated Captain ownershipEstimated FLEX ownership
CeeDee Lamb~24%~45%
Javonte Williams~18%~39%
Dak Prescott~15%~48%
George Pickens~9%~32%
Jalon Daniels~9%~37%
Bucky Irving~6%~28%
Emeka Egbuka~5%~26%
Chris Godwin Jr.~4%~23%
Jake Ferguson~2%~25%
Cade Otton~2%~25%

Low ownership helps only when the player has a plausible path to enough points. Being different and being wrong are extremely compatible activities.

Sources Assumptions & research notes

Initial research: October 7 Central. Stat checks, projections, optimization and simulation work: October 8 Central. Market and ownership figures remain earlier snapshots. Salaries came from nine supplied screenshots covering 52 unique entries; Spy/Huddle payout settings came from four supplied screenshots.

Testing: 40,000 initial conditional games and 12,000 additional games for Spy/Huddle payout comparisons. Quarterback yards and TDs reconcile to receiving output; defenses credit sampled opponent turnovers. Legal opponent lineups and duplication were modeled under assumed ownership, with ties sharing the prizes at their occupied ranks.

Limits: This is partial correlation, not a drive simulation. Workloads and variability are editorial assumptions. Fields are hypothetical; ownership has not been empirically calibrated. We tested several field strengths, but assigned no script probabilities. Raw modeled returns are omitted because they are not credible profit forecasts. Core Builds maximize conditional projections within disclosed role restrictions, not actual tournament payouts. The simulation compared these seven candidates; it did not prove one the best of all possible lineups.

Earlier markets: Anytime-TD snapshot: Williams −235, Lamb −110, Pickens +120, Ferguson +225. These price at least one TD, not two or optimal Captain. [7] Secondary yardage thresholds: Dak 265.5 passing; Daniels 181.5 passing / 46.5 rushing; Lamb 80.5 receiving; Pickens 61.5 receiving; Williams 73.5 rushing / 15.5 receiving. They await direct sportsbook confirmation. An over/under is not automatically an expected output. [8]

Role restrictions: Known OUT/IR players, unsupported roles and selected smallest-role punts were excluded from optimization. Coach Taylor's chosen Core Build sacrificed about 0.4 conditional projected points versus a Turpin version. Removing Hurst cost less than one projected point in Rothstein and about a tenth in Williams; small differences do not establish certainty.
